Political crisis in the country deepened on Saturday following a row between the two organs of the state over appointment of judges prompting rumours of emergency after the Supreme Court suspended the Presidency's notification on elevation of two judges. When contacted, spokesman of the President, Farhatullah Babar categorically denied rumours of emergency.
Sources said a meeting was convened in the Presidency to discuss the situation after the suo motu notice taken by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and suspension of notification by the court. The meeting in the Presidency was said to be attended by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Law Minister and other bigwigs. A delegation of Fata is also reported to have called on President Zardari and according to sources, the President issued the notifications for the elevation of judges after consultation with his coalition partners.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League (N) has also convened the party meeting In Islamabad today (Sunday) to discuss the political situation and devise future strategy while the opposition parties have strongly criticised the appointment of judges without consultation with the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
