The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has launched a national level of Video Conferencing facility in 70 universities and degree awarding institutions across the country. The Digital Voice and Video Communication Section of HEC deals with the organisation, operations and management of online and interactive video sessions arranged locally as well as internationally.
The section is also involved in expanding the deployment of Video Conferencing facilities at all public sector universities. The Video Conferencing facility at 70 public sector universities, institutions and other government allied Bodies has been established in phases.
The facility was established at 18 sites in 2006-07 in the first phase and to 15 sites in 2007-08 in the second phase, while the facility was provided to 37 more sites in 2008-09 in the third phase. The major objective is to bring universities in the country closer and to interact and collaborate through IP-based Video Conferencing System, so that students of those universities, who are not in a position to benefit from high profiled teachers, may have the opportunity to learn from them, share ideas and views to enhance their productivity.
The Video Conferencing infrastructure includes establishment of state-of-the-art classroom environment for distance learning, virtual interactive sessions and deployment of high-profiled equipment for centrally managing the facility and online events. The centrally deployed infrastructure includes Multi-Point Conferencing Unit (MCU) for facilitating multiple conferences simultaneously each with multiple sites.
