The Supreme Court will resume hearing of a number of important cases this week starting from February 15 at the Principal seat Islamabad.
According to cause lists, on Monday (today) a three-member bench of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Ghulam Rabbani will take up cases of Rs 9 billion Haris Steel Mills loan scam and a suo motu taken on an application of lecturer of Mian Channu against private medical fee structure.
The bench will resume hearing of arguments of government officers on Monday (today) who were promoted to BPS-22 by the Prime Minister. A number of officials appeared before the bench on Friday and defended themselves by reiterating that their promotions were done on merit.
The same bench on January 29 had reserved its judgement for a week in promotion case, besides directing Secretary Establishment Division to ensure services of notices to promoted officers. The bench in its order had allowed the promoted persons if they desired to be heard an appropriate order would be passed. In Haris Steel Mills case, the accused have paid back the siphoned off money and according to Khawja Haris, counsel for Bank of Punjab, who told the bench during previous proceedings that out of total amount about Rs 7.5 billion had been retrieved.
On Court's directives, one of the main accused Hamesh Khan, former president of BoP, had also been arrested. NAB and FIA authorities had apprised the bench that efforts were made to deport him from US. Similarly, the bench would also hear progress on its related directives.
While in private medical colleges fee structure case, Secretary Pakistan Medical and Dental Council was directed on last hearing to submit comments over the issue. The applicant had stated that fee should be brought down from Rs 800,000 to Rs 500,000 annually. On February 18, the five-member bench headed by Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan will hear judges' appointment case. A special bench on Saturday evening had already suspended the notifications issued over elevation of LHC judges.
On the same day three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice will resume hearing in Pakistan Steels Mills corruption case. The FIA officials will apprise the bench about progress on registering of criminal cases and arrest of accused.
Minister for Interior A Rehman Malik was also served with contempt of court notice over removal of DG FIA Tariq Khosa who was tasked by the apex court to proceed in the Steels corruption case. On the last hearing, the bench had allowed him to engage his counsel after he submitted a written reply over the issue.
While another bench of Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Tariq Parvez on February 18 will take up a plea submitted by Shahid Orakzai seeking removal of Punjab Chief Minister. The bench on last hearing had directed counsel for CM Punjab Khawja Haris to file statement on the issue, besides, directing Election Commission of Pakistan to provide relevant record of the constituencies from where he had contested elections.
