Bid to evade Rs 4.19 million taxes foiled: consignment of door closures detained

Directorate General, Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I)-FBR, Karachi has detained consignment of door closures imported from China, which was deliberately mis-declared as door controllers to evade Rs 4.19 million taxes through Model Customs Collectorate (MCC).
In pursuance of specific information, regarding mis-declaration of description and value of door closures, the staff of the DGI&I, Karachi has detained a container bearing No MSCU-3967916, on 10.02.2010 at QICT, after having been finally released by MCC, PaCCS, sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday.
They said that Khas Trading Company (NTN 0897447), Karachi has imported the consignment from China under brand name "KHAS" vide VIR No OIT-6797125.01.2010, Index No 109. The CRN l-HC-1301919/03.02.2010 was electronically filed by clearing agent Fahad Impex. They said the joint re-examination of the consignment conducted on 3.02.2010 by the DGI&I and MCC officials, has revealed that the description of consignment was mis-declared by the clearing agent and the same was assessed by MCC officials.
They said the assessable value of door closure was notified as US $5.45/Kg, under section 25A of the Customs Act, 1969 by the Directorate General of Customs Valuation, Karachi, vide C.No Misc/05/2009-IVC12460 dated 31.10.2009, whereas the same was declared $0.4578/Kg by the clearing agent and assessed at 0.65/Kg by the assessing staff.
Moreover, they said the assessment of sales tax on another item ie Patch Fitting was also done at 2 percent, despite declaring the same by the clearing agents at 16 percent and 2 percent, costing Rs 4.19 million to the national exchequer. They further said the DGI&I has seized the consignment under section 168(1) of the Customs Act, 1969 subsequently the gross mis-declaration of description was detected. The FIR in this regard has been lodged and the report is going to be forwarded to the adjudicating authority for proceedings.
