Former Chief Secretary Punjab AZK Sherdil has stated that independent media, parliament and civil society can play their due roles in effective monitoring of the government performance to ensure management of public affairs in an open, transparent and equitable manner for promoting good governance in the country.
He was addressing a national conference on the issues of governance in Pakistan organised by the Political Science Department of Punjab University (PU) on Thursday. Vice Chancellor, PU, Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran, Chairperson Political Science Department Dr Ambreen Javed and scholars from different universities also addressed the audience.
AZK Sherdil observed that by achieving good governance a remarkable improvement could be brought about in the public affairs of our country besides curing the myriad ills affecting our polity. He said good governance signifies judicious and merit-based exercise of government authority in accordance with rules and constitution to benefit all members of society irrespective of their wealth, social status or position.
A number of factors like illiteracy, inefficient and incompetent administrative machinery, absence of rule of law, corruption and lack of genuine political leadership and accountability are responsible for the prevalence and persistence of sad state of governance in the country, he added. PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran said in 62 years of our existence, the successive governments have shown deliberate neglect to the development of education sector.
The progress and prosperity of Pakistan largely depend upon the quality of education being made available to the youngsters who would shape the future destiny of our country, he remarked. Presenting the welcome address, Dr Ambreen Javed, Chairperson Political Department observed that good governance at all tiers is the dire need of today and recommended drastic measures to overcome problems arising out of prolonged absence of good governance in the country.
