The Spanish government has proposed eliminating limits on company voting rights that could affect the future of some of the country's biggest companies, according to a newspaper report on Saturday. Daily El Pais said the change, if approved, could affect major energy companies such as Repsol YPF and Iberdrola, as well as telephone group Telefonica, all of which limit voting rights to 10 percent for each shareholder, the report said.
If that were the case it could affect a stand-off between Repsol and construction firm Sacyr, which owns 20 percent of the company and wants to see a change in the oil major's management. Any change to voting rights could also help Spanish builder ACS, which has a 12 percent stake in power group Iberdrola, and is pushing for more say on its board. The report said banks Sabadell and Banco Popular could also be affected, as they both limit voting rights to 10 percent.
