Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz enjoys significant support in NA-123 and political pundits say that the party will emerge victorious in the election battle which seems very much one sided after the success in NA-55. Moreover, NA-123 is a most important constituency of the provincial metropolis, which has witnessed victory of some historic figures during several election bouts in past.
In 2002, this constituency was carved out by bifurcating previous NA-94 and NA-92. The union councils falling in the area are UC-14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22 (some part), 23 (some part) and UC-35. Arains are in majority in the constituency while Kashmiris, Rajputs and Mughals are also in good number. The provincial seats falling in the constituency are PP-143 and PP-144.
The major area of the constituency including Ghoray Shah, Singhpura, Gujjarpura, Shawala Chowk, China Scheme, Begumpura were taken from previous NA-94, the constituency where slain PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto was elected in the first ever general election of her life in 1988 after defeating Mian Umer Hayat, a candidate supported by nine parties under the banner of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI).
However, Benazir Bhutto, who had won on two seats, vacated this constituency where PPP fielded Mohammed Rafi who couldn't defeat Mian Umer Hayat. In 1990, Mian Umer Hayat of IJI won the election after defeating PPP's Salman Taseer.
In 1993, it was Mian Abdul Waheed of PML-N who defeated Salman Taseer after a tough fight. In 1997, PML-N's Tariq Aziz won the seat. In 2008 elections, it was Javed Hashmi who was fielded by PML-N, sailed through easily defeating the rival parties including PPP and PML-Q. Hashmi won the 2008 election with a margin of over 50,000 votes.
