161 passenger coaches rehabilitated

Ministry of Railways has completed rehabilitation process of 161 passenger coaches to improve services in passenger trains and ensure comfort for the travelling public. Under the phased programme, around 15 non-air-conditioned coaches have also been upgraded to business class with value addition such as comfort and group travelling in compartments.
An official at the Ministry told APP here Thursday that provision of improved and comfortable services to the passengers was Ministry's priority, which had adopted numerous measures, including replacement of electric supply system of an additional lot of 22 passenger coaches with an updated and efficient system (head end generation) to ensure reliability of lights and fans.
The official said, as a result of steps, catering services on trains and at stations are better now. Moreover, reservation facility is available up to 23 hours while credit card is also accepted for the purchase of tickets at Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi reservation offices. Around 13 more reservation offices have been computerised with work on five in progress.
The official further informed that to enhance the security arrangements, Pakistan Railways police have been directed to ensure high level of alertness, intensify checking and patrolling of railway installations, track and trains. Railway employees have been advised to be alert on duty and take notice of any injurious activity, suspicious persons or unclaimed articles and luggage.
Train staff thoroughly checks the train with police escort while passenger services in Balochistan have been regulated and scheduled during day hours, avoiding night service. The official said entry of unconcerned persons in railway premises is prohibited and production of National Identity Cards is made compulsory for booking of luggage.
Talking about the additional measures, the official said toll free helpline No 1333 at Railway Police stations and walk through gates were provided at major railway stations. Moreover, scanning machines are being installed at Karachi and Lahore stations while CCTV cameras are working at Karachi, Lahore and Rohri railway stations. Additional stations are being equipped with electronic gadgets and entry and exit points are manned and luggage checked through metal detectors.
