Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, who is also Vice Chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), reiterated his resolve to run the party in line with the vision and mission of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (ZAB) and Benazir Bhutto. He was addressing office-bearers, party ticket holders, former councillors and workers here at the State Guest-House on Saturday.
The Prime Minister lauded the contribution of workers to bring the PPP to power and said it was the responsibility of the leadership to strengthen the party and provide relief to workers. He said conventions of party workers were being held in divisions after provincial level to organise the party at grassroots level. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said he had suggested Benazir Bhutto to hold conventions at all levels to make the party effective and she had accepted the idea.
"The PPP is not just a party but a movement and it is open to talks," he said and added it was the responsibility of workers to point out weaknesses of the leadership and guide it so that they could be overcome, if any. The Prime Minister said the leadership would make an all-out effort for the welfare of the party within available resources. He said it was the vision of Benazir Bhutto to update all tiers of the party in the country on government decisions.
The Prime Minister said the government was acting on policies aimed at the welfare of the masses and development of the country. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the purpose of addressing the nation on every first Friday of each month was to keep the people aware of the challenges taking place in world which, he added, would also help in bringing the party's point of view in the lime light.
He said he had advised the Co-Chairperson of the party to convene the CEC meeting from time to time so that the message of the leadership could reach the party workers in the country. He said the PPP government had done a lot in all sectors of life but unfortunately its achievements could not be highlighted properly. The premier said that confusion did not arise among the leadership and the workers of the party if the decisions were clear. Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that PPP had deep roots in all the four provinces including Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
He said he would also call the workers in the Prime Minister House to discuss party matters adding forums and seminars would be arranged in the country to make the party more disciplined to transfer it to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He said that PPP would establish media cells at division level to portray the real image of the Pakistan People's Party which, he added, was committed to the betterment of the country and the masses. The Prime Minister said the PPP leadership was well aware of public problems, including poverty and unemployment.
He said foreign investors were watching the law and order situation in the country and waiting for improvement in it. "Even then, investment is pouring in due to the far-sighted policy of the PPP-led government," he added. He said it was to the credit of the Pakistan People's Party that it had united the nation against terrorism and the world acknowledged the great achievement, adding that in the prevailing circumstances if a party supported terrorism, it would not get votes.
Senator Jehangir Badr, Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad, Federal Minister for Social Welfare Samina Khalid Ghurki, PPP Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmed, Secretary Finance Punjab Aurang Zaib Burki, Lahore president Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar, Naveed Chaudhry, Sajida Mir, Zikriya Butt and others were present.
