The Directorate of Human Rights, Government of Sindh on Monday organised a seminar "role of media and human rights," at a local hotel here. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Sindh Minister for Human Rights Nadia Gabol said media is playing a vital role in highlighting social evils in our society.
She said the newly developed directorate in the provincial cabinet has started working to empower and informing human beings about their basic rights. "Pakistan is an Islamic country and Islam teaches us non-violence and humanity and being a part of Muslim society, we should fight off these social evils from our homes, society and the country. Gabol said the government, media and civil society should join hands for this cause."
She said mass communicators have raised many social issues before the government and forced the government to take stern action to curb these issues. "She urged media to depict positive picture of the country for attracting tourists who are shy of coming to Pakistan due to bad law and order," she added.
Describing the performance of the newly established directorate, Secretary Human Rights Syed Ghulam Nabi Shah said the provincial ministry has launched a toll free number for the residents to complain and get speedy justice. He said the directorate has also established its regional offices in Hyderabad and Sukkur to penetrate into the interior part of the province, he added.
He said the department has received over 3,000 complaints from different parts of the province. Majority of the complaints relate to domestic violence. He said the directorate has set up a cell for quick action on the complaints received from any means of communication. Representatives of various walks of life including media, civil society, non-government organisations and others attended the seminar.
