The Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Wednesday while hearing two identical petitions challenging appointments of more than 90 law officers observed that if the accused persons were free to engage lawyers of their own choice then why government could not enjoy the same privilege. The court directed the petitioner's lawyer Chaudhry Fawad Hussain to apprise the court on this legal point on next date of hearing.
The petitions were filed by Fawad and Nazir Ahmed advocate who contended that Punjab government and federal government made these appointments on the basis of nepotism and political motivation. They argued that the appointments of additional advocate generals, assistance advocate generals, deputy attorney generals, standing counsels, and special prosecutors in special courts, were made in violation of Federal Public Service Commission Ordinance 1977. They said rules of equity and parity should be observed while making appointments of these law officers. The petitioners prayed the court to restrain these law officers from performing their duties and set aside their appointments.
