The General Body of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has demanded that issuance of licences for the establishment of sugar mills be banned in the cotton belt and all sugar mills established in this zone be shifted to the non-cotton areas.
Addressing the meeting chaired by its PCGA chairman Haji Muhammad Akram, Rana Abdul Sattar, Haji Muhammad Ibrahim, Saud Majeed, Aman-ullah, Nawab Shehzad Ali Khan, Mukhtar Baloch, Mehmood Ahmed, Hafeez Anwar, Abbas Raza, Mahesh Kumar and Shaikh Saeed Ahmed said that a cotton ginning research & training institute be established in Multan and Bahawalpur.
They urged upon the government to take effective measures for boosting up cotton production so that the demands of the local industry could be met. They advised that the government should announce the cotton policy and support price of cotton immediately besides resolving the problems of electricity load-shedding and high power tariff.
Nawab Shehzad Ali khan on this occasion said that ginners had rejected the 'dictatorship' and 'undemocratic means' used by the opponents. PCGA Chairman Haji Muhammad Akram said that PCGA would be made a democratic and welfare organisation and every possible measure would be taken to protect the rights of the ginners because they had reposed confidence on this body. Earlier, the general body ratified the elections of PCGA.
