Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KFHA) has distributed 23 onboard flake ice plants, along with generators worth Rs 32.2 million, to the successful owners of 23 modified large fishing boats free of cost through balloting.
Sindh Fisheries Minister, Zahid Ali Bhurgari, administered the balloting along with chairman, KFHA, in a ceremony held last Saturday at the authority's head office. The Sindh government has provided funds for the procurement of the onboard flake ice plants.
Dr Laiq Ahmed, Secretary Livestock & Fisheries, Aijaz Ahmed Mangi, Managing Director, KFHA, Ghulam Muhammad Mehar Director General Fisheries Sindh, Mustafa Jamal Kazi, Director Administration and Finance, Engr. Shuneed Memon, Director Engineering, Anis Soomro, Director Operations, KFHA and representatives of fishermen and boat owners were present on the occasion. About 75 large size fishing boats have so far been modified under the ADP Scheme "Rehabilitation and Renovation of Karachi Fish Harbour". These modified boats were included in the balloting.
Zahid Ali Bhurgari said that the government would provide all assistance to the boat owners and fishermen to improve the quality of seafood catch. He said that with the financial assistance of Sindh government, the KFHA has procured plastic crates, insulated plastic containers, stainless steel hand pallet trucks and fork lifters to meet the European Union (EU) standards.
These onboard flake ice plants will be fixed on the modified large fishing boats with a capacity of producing one ton flake ice daily through seawater. It will reduce a substantial cost of the boat owner in purchasing of block ice from the market.
As per agreement between the KFHA and the successful boat owners, the latter will be responsible for the maintenance of the plant. He could not sell, transfer and shift it to anyone. If anyone does that, the respective owner's documents, ie, registration, fishing permit and license will be cancelled without a notice.
The boat owner could not carry block ice on boat while setting on voyage for fishing. He will also nominate two persons for training to operate the plant. In case the modified boat remains non-operational up to six months, the KFHA the reserves a right to take back the plant and install on another modified boat.
He will also produce his modified boat to the KFHA or MFD, as and when required for inspection. The list of successful boat owners includes, Khan Mir, Moosa Khan, M Abbas, Taqi, Ali Muhammad , M Shakil, M Aslam, Abdul Sattar, Sarwar Ejaz, M Mateen, Abdul Majeed, M Iqbal, M Imran, Jamil, Abdul Rahman, Ahmad, Mubarak Baloch, Umeed Bux, M Ashraf, M Haroon, Abdul Karim, Imran Moosa and Aboo Akbar.
