Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan has said that wisdom will have to be taken out of universities, literary and intellectual gatherings and shelves and use for solving problems of the society. "Wisdom has been the legacy of Muslims and till such time it was used for all practical purposes, we continued to progress," the governor said adding, "now we have to reconnect the missing link".
He was talking to a group of intellectuals, which called on him at the Governor House Tuesday. The Governor said that people with knowledge and wisdom provide guidance to the governments through think tanks etc. They not only think over the problems of the society but also offer solution. Their positive impacts also prove helpful for good governance which, when achieve improvement, helps solve the problems, the Governor said.
Ibad emphasised that the research taking place in universities on a large scale has to be used in the practical field and the works and efforts by those hundreds doing Ph.Ds from universities, should not become a decorative piece in shelves but be used for bringing improvement in their respective fields of research.
He pointed out that after the 2005 disastrous earthquake, when work was taken up on disaster management, it came to light that a lot of ground has been covered in the universities in this respect, which could be made beneficial for the country and its people by giving it a practical shape.
This experience and research and the ups and downs, which people of knowledge and wisdom pass through and who possess the treasures with regard to conditions, history and knowledge of a country, have to be made beneficial for the progress of Pakistan to solve the problems and for public welfare projects, he articulated.
"There is no problem in the world which does not have a solution", the Governor observed and asserted that there is a need for collective wisdom to carry the country forward in the wake of war on terror, regional issues and ongoing challenges. He said the country could be steered to the path of progress by extracting from problems through this thinking and comprehension with political and administrative backup and carving out a respectful place in the comity of world nations.
On the occasion, Mushtaq Yusufi said that the role of intellectuals is to show the path and it will just be a wishful thinking that they can bring a revolution on their own. Mahmood Sham was of the view that the way the Governor kept bringing various sectarian, linguistic and other groups closer to each other, saving the situation from going deteriorated on various occasions, was his contribution alone.
He emphasised the need for think tanks, which are impartial and free from official patronage. He said wisdom and Pakistan would have to be linked together.
Nisar Zuberi said the way Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad spent 8 years in the office deserves appreciation. He further said the younger generation needs to be kept abreast with the spirit and sacrifices with which Pakistan came into being and infuse in them the same spirit, which the country needs.
Noted intellectual Yusuf Jamal said the best characteristic of Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad was him being a great humanist, and said the way he took interest in solving the problems of artists, sportsmen, people of knowledge and wisdom and even the common man, is a model. He said the Governor himself reaches the people and solves their problems. Sarshar Siddiqi, Parveen Farhat, Shaukat Abid, Irshad Jilani, Dr Fatima Hasan, Farast Rizvi and others also expressed their views on the occasion.
