A blast at Lyari Expressway (LEW) near Garden West area on Tuesday in which a young woman and four others including three children were injured has put the investigators into deep trouble as they have failed to ascertain the reasons of explosion.
Initially, the police failed to determine the jurisdiction of the police station where this mysterious explosion had taken place and late night decision of handing over case to Pak Colony police station further complicated the investigations. A single line story is that the investigating agencies have failed to know the reasons of mysterious blast due to lack of trained manpower and resources.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), whose performance has already been questioned after planted blast at the city's largest federal government-run hospital, failed to reach any point to conclude the matter. An official of BDS told Business Recorder that the squad had failed to ascertain the reason of the mysterious explosion due to lack of evidence.
"We have not found pieces either of hand grenade, detonator or explosive evidence from blast's site, but deep scratches into solid cement blocks raised questions," he said. According to Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Police South Zone Ghulam Nabi Memon the BDS had not submitted final report and it would be premature to reach a single point before submission of expert's findings.
The police arrested many criminals from the area, but have not recovered any type of explosive material from the possession of arrested persons. "The police department has enhanced security of the affected zone," he added. DSP Usman Asghar of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) police said Peoples Colony, Garden West, considered as grey area.
"I had recovered five suicide jackets from a house located in Peoples Colony some four years ago and later arrested a few persons of Harkat-ul Mujahideen in this case," he added. "The mysterious explosion has put all investigation agencies into deep trouble, as none of them could conclude probe in the incident, he said, adding that CID also put into another test to ascertain the reason of the blast."
On the other hand, area residents have complained of increase in crime rate and absence of garbage dumping facility in the area. They said the government has constructed huge expressway and divided the area resident of Peoples Colony. At the time of expressway's construction, the government had demolished many houses and shifted them to Old Golimar locality.
When area residents cross the expressway to join their jobs, they are either looted or gunned down. They said there is no garbage dumping facility in the area. The area residents collect the garbage and set the waste on fire. "The emitted smoke of the burning waste may result in another health hazard if not treated properly," they warned.
