'1,000 megawatts addition by month's end likely'

Measures being adopted to enhance power generation in the country as around 1000 MW electricity is expected to be added in the national grid by end of this month, said Director General Pepco Muhammad Khalid. Work on new power plants of 1000 MW is in progress, which we expect to be ready by end of this month and start providing electricity to help minimise load shedding, he said while talking to a private news channel.
The DG Pepco said in addition, 8 rental power plants, already approved by the cabinet, would also start providing electricity in June. Khalid said priority was being given to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the textile and power looms industry in Faisalabad. He said Pepco was trying that load shedding in the textile city does not exceed to 4 hours daily.
Replying to a question, he said arrangement of rental power plants is meant to meet the power shortage and this would not cause any increase in the power tariff as government was giving subsidy, adding that the tariff determined by Nepra would only be charged from the consumers. He said the government was focusing on producing electricity through hydro means, which is the cheapest source of generating power.
