Registration of Afghan refugees started here on Monday with the volunteer registration of nine members of one family on the very first day of the resumption of the repatriation process. For this purpose, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has established a repatriation centre at Chamkani, Peshawar.
The Commissioner, Afghan Commissionerate, Jamaluddin opened the centre in the presence of the officials of the UN agency. Besides offices of the Nadra, kiosks for the provision of medical facilities have also been established in the centre. The centre will carry de-registration of the registered Afghan refugees residing in different areas of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP).
On the very first day nine members of the same family voluntarily registered themselves for repatriation to Afghanistan. The centre was earlier operating in Hayatabad, but due to security concern it has been shifted to Chamkani. Talking to media, Commissioner, Afghan Refugees, Jamaluddin ruled out the registration of the unregistered Afghan nationals.
He said that presently about one million registered Afghan refugees are residing in the province of whom 6, 63,000 are living 29 camps established in seven districts while 4, 42,000 are living outside the camps. He said that Afghan Commissionerate lack data regarding unregistered refugees.
He said that procedure for those refugees, whose cards have been expired, is being prepared and they would be issued cards soon. However, he made it clear that the commissionerate has no plans for the registration of the unregistered refugees.
