Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the purpose of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund is to polish the talent of such students who could not continue their studies due to financial problems.
He said 20 students of Lums are being given scholarships from the fund while this number will be increased to 50 next year, while a programme is also being evolved for giving scholarship to 5 brilliant students for studying those subjects in Ivy League universities, which are not taught in Pakistani universities.
He was addressing a meeting of board of directors of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund here on Monday, disclosed an official. Shahbaz termed education of the youth on modern lines necessary for national development. He said there are a number of such brilliant students who are not able to continue their studies due to financial constraints and the educational fund has been set up for such talented students, adding that a large number of students are benefiting from this fund.
"Provision of scholarships form the fund is continuing in a transparent manner and a programme is being evolved for providing scholarships to the students studying at Lums, Nust, Fast and other prestigious educational institutions," he added.
The CM said brilliant students from other provinces are also being awarded scholarships under this programme for the promotion of national solidarity. 50 position holders will be sent on a study tour to Britain, France, Germany and Sweden, besides one student each from northern areas and Azad Kashmir would also be included in the programme.
This study tour will also promote self-confidence in the students. There is a need to focus on science and technology, medical, veterinary and agri-science sectors so that the students studying these subjects could play their due role in national development, he urged.
Shahbaz on this occasion also issued instructions for setting up a special committee that will evolve an action plan, keeping in view various recommendations including further expansion of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund. He lauded the services of Dr Muhammad Saqib, Vice Chairman Punjab Educational Endowment Fund, in the success of this scheme.
