In its last ditch effort to further delay implementation of Supreme Court's verdict on NRO, the government on Sunday removed Deputy Attorney General Shah Khawar after the surprise resignation of former Attorney General, Anwar Mansoor, on Friday.
The government has appointed Ilyas Khan and Chaudhry Mazhar advocates as deputy attorney generals, filling the key law ministry positions at a time of widespread tumult after the resignation of Anwar Mansoor and removal of Shah Khawar. Mansoor resigned on Friday citing "non-co-operation" by Law Minister, Babar Awana, accusing him of obstructing efforts to implement Supreme Court's order to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland.
After removing Shah Khawar, the government has appointed him as member tax tribunal in Peshawar. Shah Khawar, when contacted, told Business Recorder that he was already going to resign on Monday (today), as he had smelled a rat.
"I myself was going to resign on Monday. I was sure that the government wants to remove me," he added. He said that he would not accept government's offer of appointing him as member tax tribunal in Peshawar. Though, it is lucrative position and people try their level best to get such slots, I do not need it and I will never accept it, he declared.
Sources said that the legal team of the government has been changed over the recommendations of the Federal Law Minister, Babar Awan. They said that Khawar like his predecessor Anwar Mansoor was not being provided many documents he required by the law ministry. Sources further claimed that Khawar was also facing difficulties being created by Law Ministry in carrying out his professional duties and he was not being allowed to work properly.
