The Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday submitted a compliance report regarding the implementation of Supreme Court judgement on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to the Supreme Court office. The report was submitted by Secretary Law and Justice, former judge Aqil Mirza, as per the commitment before the seven-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
When contacted, Registrar office confirmed to have received the report, however, it refused to share the contents. Earlier, on April 1, the seven-member bench had directed Secretary Law to complete the process of reopening of Swiss cases, following the procedure adopted in 1997.
On that day, Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan had informed the court that Federal Minister for Law and Justice Dr Babar Awan was the stumbling block in reopening of Swiss money laundering case against President Asif Ali Zardari. The court had also declared that the letter written by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to Swiss authorities for reopening of cases unsatisfactory and of no legal value.
The court had also given fresh instructions regarding action against Malik Qayyum, former AG and had suggested sending a reference against him under Section 9 (6) of the NAB ordinance, Section 463 (forgery) and 468 (false documents) of the PPC and several provisions of Anti-corruption ordinance, for withdrawing cases from Swiss courts. NAB's letter to Swiss authorities is still pending with the law ministry. However, NAB had earlier told the court that a letter to the Swiss government for reopening cases against President Zardari had been sent.
