There is growth of 12.9 percent and 15.3 percent in direct taxes and sales tax respectively during July-February (2009-10) against the collection in the corresponding period of last fiscal year. Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that the Federal Excise Duty (FED) and customs duty have registered an increase of 5.8 percent and 2.3 percent respectively during July-February (2009-10) as compared to last year.
The collection out of arrears demand has registered a growth of 83.9 percent during the period under review. However, increase in collection out of current demand and advance tax over the past year was 5.3 percent and 11.4 percent respectively. Keeping in view position of revenue collection, FBR Chairman FBR directed the concerned Members and Chief Commissioners Large Taxpayer Units and Regional Tax Offices (RTOs) that, "in order to achieve the assigned targets, we need to do whatever we can".
He conceded that the target is no doubt stiff but with concerted effort and given potential, it is entirely achievable. FBR Chairman observed that audit cases which have been stayed by the court, relevant courts/ tribunals be requested for early fixation to ensure that tax due under the law is collected well in time.
The FBR chairman informed the tax officials that there was no growth in revenue during the first three months of the current financial year due to enormous increase in POL prices. However, from October onwards, there has been steady and noticeable improvement each month despite tremendous challenges. FBR Chairman said utmost attention is to be given to monitoring of withholding taxes in view of substantial revenue contributed by it.
All-out efforts should be made towards recovery out of arrears demand. Where demand is stuck in appeals, steps be taken for early hearing and quick disposal. Each Chief Commissioner should set his priorities according to the potential and specific areas, sources quoted the FBR chairman as saying. The FBR Chairman exhorted the field formations to achieve the assigned targets. He hoped that the Chief Commissioners will successfully overcome difficulties of management and deliver in line with confidence reposed in them.
