Federal and provincial governments told to set up public safety commissions: Supreme Court disposes of police torture case
The Supreme Court on Tuesday disposed the police torture case and directed the federal and provincial governments to constitute public safety commissions within a month. The Supreme Court took up a case of police torture after footage emerged showing policemen at their very worst during an incident in Chiniot.
Earlier, the apex court had ordered closure of police torture cells in private houses. The three-member bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal also directed the Punjab government to issue show cause notices to the concerned DIGs and SPs in the police brutality case. Justice Javed Iqbal observed that there was a lack of political will to change the police culture. However, the IG of Punjab claimed that the media had overplayed the issue and had turned the entire nation against the police force.
