Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister of Punjab Dr Tanvir-ul-Islam has said that 14 new jails are under construction in different districts of Punjab at a cost of Rs 8 billion to overcome the issue of over-crowdedness in the prisons. He expressed these views during his visit to district jail in Sialkot, disclosed an official here Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said government is giving special attention to the welfare of jail inmates. "Protection of prisoners rights is our responsibility," he said. Dr Tanvir-ul-Islam informed that government has made special arrangement for blood screening of prisoners for hepatitis and other diseases and that better treatment facilities are being extended in the jails. He on this occasion announced to donate x-ray machine for the hospital from his own pocket.
