The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has started refilling of the country's biggest water reservoir Tarbela dam on the mighty Indus river that had reached its dead level of 1,378 feet above the sea on March 15. The water inflow in river Indus has increased in the river to 39,300 cusecs out of which Irsa is releasing 35,000 cusecs downstream the dam and retaining 4,300 cusecs in the reservoir.
The water level has risen by one and half ft in the dam during the past 24 hours. According to April 19 river flows and reservoirs level report of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) water inflow in the river Jhelum has also reached 41,200 cusecs mark upstream Mangla dam.
The authorities are releasing 26,000 cusecs water from the dam for irrigation and electricity generation purposes and retaining the rest of the flows in the reservoir. Water level in Mangla dam has already risen from its dead level of 1040 ft to 1083 feet above the sea and stored 0.340 MAF water in it.
The report indicated that more than 1,27,000 cusecs water is inflowing at the four rivers' rim stations, Indus at Tarbela 39,300 cusecs, river Kabul at Nowshera 31,600 cusecs, river Jhelum at Mangla 41,200 cusecs and river Chenab at Marala 16,900 cusecs. Punjab Irrigation Department is releasing 12,900 cusecs water downstream the Marala headworks towards central and southern Punjab for sowing the strategic Kharif crops including cotton, rice and sugarcane. After increase in the river water flows with setting in of summer in the upper regions of the country, inflow at Jinnah barrage on river Indus has gone up to 58,900 cusecs, at Chashma 52,600 cusecs, Taunsa 45,100 cusecs Guddu 24,000 cusecs, Sukkur barrage 22,100 cusecs and Kotri barrage 4455 cusecs.
