The Energy Summit has constituted three high level committees to devise short, medium and long term measures on energy conservation and load management plan, sources apprised Business Recorder. They said the committee would suggest Prime Minister (PM) Yousuf Raza Gilani of ways to save as many units as possible through conservation to meet the prevalent shortage of electricity that is 5000MW.
Sources also said that the conservation committee on short-term measures would discuss and finalise a short-term strategy on Wednesday (today), followed by its submission to the Prime Minister on Thursday for immediate action. The committee formed for short term measures included Chairman Aptma Punjab Gohar Ejaz, leading industrialist Zubair Motiwala from Sindh and Secretaries Power from Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkha.
It may be noted that the two-day energy summit in Islamabad, attended by the four chief ministers along with teams of experts, discussed all aspects of power shortage in the country and formulated concrete proposals to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
The agenda for the 'Energy and Power Conference' was identified as utilisation of the existing capacity of power projects, diversification of gas to the power sector, resolution of issues of payments to PEPCO, resolution of circular debts, enable fuel base IPPs to increase production, better management to improve efficiency of power plants as well as transmission losses, focus on medium-term projects for expanding capacity through construction of hydel, coal and other sources of energy, better load management and efforts for energy or electricity conservation. Gilani had also pointed out that public protests in various cities against load shedding were becoming a daily routine and a source of serious concern for the government.
