The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission to hold by-elections in PP-160 (Lahore-XXIV) after it was informed that Rana Mubashir Iqbal, member of Punjab Assembly from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had tendered resignation. A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Ghulam Rabbani disposed of the case.
"Petition is disposed of without any prejudice and Election Commission of Pakistan is required to issue notification for holding of by-election", the court said. Advocate Hamid Khan, counsel for Rana Mubashir told the court that his client had decided to resign from the assembly after consulting his party leadership.
Hamid Khan requested the court to grant one month time to Rana Mubashir Iqbal for submitting his resignation, which the court turned down and directed him to resign in one or two days. The court ordered Rana to send the copy of his resignation to Speaker Punjab Assembly. A voter of his constituency had challenged graduation degree of Mubashir Iqbal, a Muslim League (Nawaz) member, in Supreme Court.
