Begum Hasina Khairuddin, widow of late Khwaja Khairuddin, passed away on Monday after protracted illness. She was 83. She had migrated to Karachi in 1974 with other members of the family, followed by Khwaja Khairuddin later married to a politician, who fought for Pakistan from his university days and a scion of the Dacca Nawab family.
Her father late Khwaja Abdul Aleem and grandfather late Khwaja Abdur Rahim, were among the top leaders of Khilafat Movement and the non-co-operation movement in the then Bengal. She used to say "politics is in my blood."
She was the driving force in all election campaigns that her late husband fought. Khwaja Khairuddin had been an elected chairman of Dacca Municipality, member of the National Assembly and finally challenged Shaikh Mujibrur Rahman in the 1971 historic election.
