Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of modern, comfortable and affordable transport facilities to the people and quick and efficient disposal of garbage and waste from cities is the top priority of the government. He said for this purpose concrete measures are being taken for the realistic utilisation of resources as well as improvement of the performance of various departments.
He was talking before the departure of a delegation from Punjab to Turkey for benefiting from its expertise in solid waste management and transport sectors here on Saturday. He said negotiations are going on with various foreign companies regarding solid waste management for providing better environment to the people. The option of power generation from solid waste collected from the cities is also under consideration, he added.
The Chief Minister said people are facing problems due to unsatisfactory sanitary and cleanliness condition in the cities. Heaps of garbage could also be seen everywhere in the provincial metropolis despite the use of costly machinery and heavy expenditure on salaries of the officials of Solid Waste Management Department.
He said poor performance of the department and lack of interest of the officials in their duties were the main causes of the problem. He said the performance of the department could not be improved without evolving an effective monitoring system and for this purpose young officers imbued with the spirit of public service should come forward. He said that these young officers should be encouraged.
