A British soldier was killed by an explosion while on foot patrol Sunday in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said in London. The serviceman, from 40 Commando Royal Marines, was hit by the blast in Sangin, Helmand province on a patrol in support of the Afghan National Army, said an MoD statement.
His death brings the British military death toll in Afghanistan to 285 since operations began there in 2001. Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan, largely fighting the Taliban in Helmand.
