The US Embassy has received a letter from Pakistani government demanding extradition of Hamesh Khan, former Bank of Punjab head, to stand trial for his alleged involvement in Rs 9 billion fraud. Press Attache of US embassy Richard W Sneslire confirmed to Business Recorder on telephone on Monday that a letter was received from the government of Pakistan for Hamesh Khan's extradition, which would be immediately sent to the authorities concerned in Washington.
Hamesh Khan, the principal accused in the BoP multi billion rupee fraud, fled the country in 2008 despite the fact that his name was on the Exit Control List (ECL). His escape was reportedly in connivance with the authorities of National Accountability Bureau NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif recently expressed reservations over the possibility of the Federal Law Minister Babar Awan, the counsel for Harris Steel, hampering his extradition which may have compelled the government to seek his extradition within the stipulated deadline given by the US authorities.
Foreign Office received a letter from the Law Ministry for return of Hamesh Khan to Pakistan and forwarded it to the US embassy. The Deputy Prosecutor General of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) along with another official was reportedly leaving for US to meet the legal requirements to bring Hamesh Khan back. The government in the letter has, as required, extended an assurance that the accused would not be mistreated.
