Site Association of Industry (SAI) has announced their support to the May 11 (today) strike call given by value-added sector against export of yarn. The association advised its members to assemble at association office along with their work force to make the strike successful. It further advised them to suspend the loading of containers to the port of value added products.
Meanwhile, President, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Abdul Majeed Haji Mohammad has said that the matter of unlimited export of yarn and raw material is the talk in public and private sectors. He said that KCCI is of the view that exports espoused with value addition and branded with logos - "Made in Pakistan", be prioritised rather than export of raw material.
In a communication to federal minister for commerce, he said that for the export of indigenous products and raw materials some benchmarks should be set to ensure that domestic and value added export-oriented industry do not suffer.
During past years we have witnessed that the raw material which Pakistan export, become scarce domestically and ultimately the country has to import the same at a higher price, he said adding that the same phenomena is for Pakistan's bumper crops, when available in abundance are exported, but after few months the same crop is imported on higher price than it was exported due to its scarcity in the country.
Textile export is the main source of earning foreign exchange and it contributes over 50 percent of Pakistan's total exports, but unfortunately high operational cost, hike in tariff of power and gas has declined the export activities. Due to high operational costs exports are unable to compete in the global market. Some relief must be given to textile sector in the form of exemptions or relief in taxes, he concluded.
