Punjab government has undertaken "Clean Drinking Water for All" (CDWA) project at a cost of Rs 12.9 billion under which 3,494 water purification plants would be installed in each union council of the province, senior advisor to Chief Minister, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa said here on Tuesday.
Presiding over a meeting regarding "Clean Drinking Water for All" (CDWA), Khosa said that the provincial government wanted to provide hygienic drinking water to every citizen in order to save the people from contaminated water related diseases that is major cause of deaths in the province. The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Chief Secretary Punjab Nasir Mehmood Khosa, Secretary Local Government Anwar Ahmad Khan and other high ranking officers.
The meeting was informed that the entire funds for the project will be provided by the federal government and it will be implemented by LG&CD Development Department, Punjab. The department has signed agreements with 5 contractors and for the purpose of benchmarking 5 model purification plants have been installed by the contractors at Ganga Ram Hospital, Lady Aitcheson Hospital, Ittefaq Hospital, Sheikh Zaid Hospital and Tabligi Markaz Raiwind. In addition to that one each plant has been installed at Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, DG Khan and Multan.
The Senior Advisor instructed the Local Government Authorities to install the water filtration plant at most suitable sites so that maximum people could be benefited from these plants. The executing agencies should not change the sites without any solid justification and steps be taken for availability of electricity and land otherwise the implementation on the project would be delayed, he added.
The Chief Secretary also suggested that the officers of Wapda be also invited for the early supply of electricity to these water purification plants. The Finance Minister assured that finance department will co-operate for smooth cash flow for the completion of the project within prescribed timeframe.
