Saudi Arabia's official sports regulator said Wednesday it has banned 46 weightlifters after they refused tests for illicit drugs ahead of a competition, the SPA news agency reported. Prince Sultan bin Fahd, head of the General Presidency for Youth Welfare and Sports, announced the ban after the 46 refused to be tested for drugs at a May 3-5 competition held in the eastern city of Dammam.
He also named nine coaches, both Saudis and non-Saudis, whose contracts were revoked in relation to the weightlifters' rejection of drugs testing. The announcement, carried by SPA, did not indicate how long the competition ban would last.
