Russian industrial output surged in April, rising 10.4 percent from the level for the same month last year, the statistics office said on Wednesday, in the latest rosy news for an economy hard hit by the crisis. For the four months to April, industrial output grew 6.9 percent compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, April's figures marked a drop of 3.4 percent compared with March, the federal statistics office said.
The output growth largely beat forecasts, with Moscow-based investment bank Uralsib having forecast 7.3-percent growth on the same month last year and a 5.7 percent decrease compared with output in March. Gas production in April grew 27.5 percent compared with the same period in 2009, while oil production grew 1.8 percent.
