Dispelling the apprehension that a clash between the government and the superior judiciary over implementation of the apex court's judgement on NRO is imminent, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday said he has telephoned Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to assure him that the government would uphold dignity of the superior judiciary.
Talking to newsmen after inaugurating the Expo Centre, Gilani said the government did not want any clash with the judiciary and would welcome and implement its decisions. "The Chief Justice has also assured me that the apex court would decide the cases in accordance with the Constitution and law," he disclosed.
The Prime Minister said the Parliament and the Judiciary are passing through an evolutionary stage, therefore, both should work to strengthen each other. "A clash between the institutions is not in favour of the government, as State's institutions could only make progress, when their constitutional position and parameters of jurisdiction are respected," he emphasised.
To a question about re-opening of the Swiss cases against President Asif Ali Zardari as directed by the Supreme Court, he said, "It is not a big issue and the government would act as per the Constitution and the law." He said democracy has been restored after a long time and PPP is working with PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif for strengthening of democracy in the country.
Gilani said the present government is following the policy of national reconciliation and the alliance of political parties is not only necessary for the political stability but also for economic development of the country. "Democracy has been restored after great sacrifices and a memorable struggle by the political parties and the superior judiciary, hence, any clash between the institutions is not in the interest of the country," he added.
Gilani said the government would uphold dignity of the judiciary at all costs and respect its judgements. Regarding economic situation of the country, the Prime Minister said for improvement and stability of the economy, the federal and provincial governments and the business community would have to work together. He said the government value the business community, therefore, it would welcome its recommendations in decision making process and implementation of its policies. He announced that the government would set up similar Expo centres in Faisalabad and Multan.
