Director General (DG) Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha on Monday gave comprehensive briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production on changing the national security policy particularly focusing on situation in Afghanistan and tribal areas.
The DG ISI on Monday gave in-camera briefing to the committee presided by Senator Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf (Retd). Deputy Chairman Senate Mir Jan Mohammad Khan Jamali, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Tariq Azeem, Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani and other officials participated in the meeting.
Reliable sources told Business Recorder the DG ISI briefed the committee about the policy on war against terror as well as foreign indulgence due to emerging US strategy in the region, especially in Afghanistan. According to sources, General Pasha said some foreign forces were creating disturbances in various parts of the country, adding that ISI was keeping an eye on their activities. They said according to Pasha's views Pakistan should consider making changes in its strategy because of changes in US policy about dealing with terrorists in Afghanistan and the Afghan government's focus on finding an indigenous solution to the problem.
According to sources, General Pasha said intelligence agencies were aware of the requirements of national security in view of the US and Indian strategic moves in the region. They said DG ISI explained all aspects and the strategy proposed to be adopted to fight terrorism, including Taliban. They said for reviewing the policy to combat terrorism, the government would take Parliament into confidence and consider the recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on National Security.
