Jamaat e Islami, has called upon India to accept Kashmir as a disputed territory in accordance with the UN resolutions and accord the Kashmiris their right to self determination enabling them to decide whether to join India or Pakistan.
An open letter from JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch addressed to the Foreign Ministers of Pakistan and India on Wednesday stressed that the talks between the two countries should not be a mere waste of time as a meaningful dialogue was required to ensure lasting peace in the region, freedom of the oppressed Kashmiris and to protect the people from falling victim to the unholy designs of the colonial powers.
The letter pointed out that the masses had rejected the U-turn and unilateral retreat by military dictator Pervez Musharraf on the Kashmir issue and they were also aware of the role of the Indian consulates in Afghanistan in training terrorists for operations in Pakistan.
It also stressed upon India to abide by the Indus Water Treaty instead of giving a negative signal to the Pakistani people by building dams on the rivers flowing from Kashmir into Pakistan. The Kashmiris were neither terrorists nor saboteurs, they were only freedom fighters and their right to liberation must be accepted, it said.
While the FM level talks between the two countries are welcomed, but the Pakistani masses did not expect much from these in view of the past experience. In spite of that, the masses desired a positive and constructive change in the India-Pakistan relations. It pointed out that Kashmir is not simply a matter concerning two neighbouring countries. Primarily, it is a matter concerning the freedom and basic human and democratic rights of the 15 million Kashmiri people who had been facing unparalleled repression for the last 70 years.
The world powers and the rulers of India and Pakistan had made several attempts to bury the Kashmir issue and to crush the sentiments of the Kashmiris, but the Kashmiris were not prepared to give up their rights. The unfair attitude of the world community, the UN and New Delhi had led to violence, terrorism and subversive activities in the area due to which dozens of innocent people were being killed daily.
