Another female nurse has become victim of sexual harassment at the workplace when a drunken Medico-Legal Officer (MLO) in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), a federally-run healthcare centre, threw an undergraduate nurse from his flat on showing resistance to rape.
A day-long investigation into an incident, which initially termed as a suicidal case, revealed that it was forcible rape attempt committed by Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon, MLO, JPMC on a third year nursing student, who was found unconscious with head injuries near 96 Doctor's Backyard Mess during wee hours of Tuesday evening. Interestingly, the MLO also flung himself from the window of his flat to turn the direction of the case, but unfortunately he fell in his own trap net. The victim nurse was shifted to neurosurgery while the alleged harasser admitted in orthopaedic ward.
A person among those who stepped first at the crime scene told Business Recorder that the flat of Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon, the MLO who found locked, but as they entered in flat, they found broken television, half-filled glass of wine and finally the open window from where MLO threw the nurse and flung himself to hide his crime. The bedroom of the MLO was found disturbed and there were several pieces of glass on the floor, which depicts the picture of forcible enforcement of his evil design. As they looked beneath from the window, they found MLO injured on the earth.
Muhammad Akram Janjua, Chief Security Officer (CSO), JPMC revealed the scene as follows: I received information from the wireless that a girls was found unconscious outside 96 Doctor's Backyard Mess. I reached there and shifted the nurse to the emergency and informed the higher authorities about the incident.
As another MLO Dr Farhat Abbas reached there to inspect the crime scene, he looked upward and seen the only opened window of MLO Memon flat. As they proceed towards his flat and knocked the door, they received no response, but heard a light cry of MLO Memon. We hurriedly break the lock, but he already flung from the window. However, reason of his move could not be ascertained.
"It is an assault case, where highly influential MLO has tried to sexually harass an undergraduate female nurse, said Dr Seemin Jamali, Joint Executive Director, JPMC, adding it is beyond ones thinking that how she reached in Memon's flat." She said the MLO had corrupt record and has been transferred from JPMC to other public-sector hospitals for at least four times, but the politically-backed officer posted to the hospital again every time. This time the provincial government has posted him at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) but he refused to vacate his allotted residence in the hostel and residing their illegally from last 15-days, she added.
"JPMC had written a letter to the MLO to vacate the hospital's residence, but he paid no heed to the warning and occupied the government property, she disclosed, adding that the administration had requested to the provincial government to replace the corrupt MLO because of his suspicious activities in the health centre."
"It seems that the MLO had tried to rape the undergraduate nurse, but as she show resistance, he threw her from his bedroom, Sehar, President, Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) Karachi-Circle said, adding that the black-listed MLO also flung from his flat's window to turn the direction of the incident, as suicidal case."
She focused that the victim received all the injuries in her right part of the body, which gave a clue that she could not balance herself when she was thrown from the flat's window. If, she tried to commit suicide then she must have some injuries in middle and left part of her body, which clear that it was a rape attempt, she said. However, Saddar police have registered a FIR no. 332/10 under section 324 of the Pakistan Panel Code (PPC) against Dr Abdul Jabbar Memon on complaint of Muhammad Akram Janjua, CFO, JPMC and have started further investigations.
