Former Chairman, Pakistan Automobile Spare Parts Importers and Dealers Association (PASPIDA) and former President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Iftikhar Malik, has strongly opposed import of reconditioned cars.
In a statement here on Thursday he said, "acceptance of any proposal to import reconditioned auto-vehicles will crush the local automobile and vendor industry." He further said import of vehicles in any shape will stop the value addition process in auto vendor industry and deletion by tractor and automobile industry so far achieved with investment of billions of rupees will go waste. "Unemployment will increase, lays off will add to the miseries of labour and poor, he added.
Malik argued that on the one hand government was borrowing dollars from IMF to finance economy while on the other hand government wants to waste valuable dollars on the import of junk in the shape of reconditioned cars rejected by the advanced countries after adopting austerity measures.
Malik further said that government should know that 90 percent of the population is poor and does not need cars, their top priority is employment and food. Therefore any proposal of wasting foreign exchange on import of second-hand/reconditioned cars should be out rightly discarded. He requested the government to encourage the local automobile industry to achieve self-reliance.
