Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares fell, after downbeat US economic data and disappointing results at Citigroup, Bank of America and General Electric heightened concerns over the pace of economic recovery.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares closed 2 percent lower at 1,012.94 points, ending the week at its lowest level since July 7. The FTSEurofirst 300 shed 0.6 percent this week, as falls in the last two sessions eclipsed gains made earlier in the week, although the index is still up 2 percent so far this month.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,040.27 points, down 109.09 or 1.77 percent, a fall of 24.97 points on the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3,500.16 points, down 81.66 or 2.28 percent. The index lost 54.32 points over the week.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 6,184.37 points, down 106.7 or 1.70 percent, 26.12 points lower on the week.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The FT IT All Share index closed at 20,662.7 points, down 329.01 or 1.57 percent, down 322.06 points since July 9.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian stocks fell 0.45 percent, in line with markets across the region, as investors were unnerved after the US economy showed further signs of slowing. The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 19.81 points to 4,422.73. It rose 0.6 percent for the week, adding 26.43 points.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South Africa's rand traded softer against the greenback as players squared off short dollar positions ahead of the weekend and as the market factored in the off-chance of a rate cut next week. The All-share index closed at 27,529.83 points, up 55.15 or 0.20 percent. The index added 257.52 points during the week. The All Gold index closed at 2,436.02 points, down 24.19 or 0.98 percent, down 16.47 points from a week ago, while the Industrial index closed at 22,680.16 points, up 179.6 or 0.80 percent, up 631.79 points since last weekend.
