The Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) has planned to explore new markets to further increase Pakistani rice exports. In this regard a 15-member trade delegation of REAP was on a trip to Mauritius, Madagascar and Comoros. In the first phase of the visit, the delegation visited Mauritius.
The High Commission of Pakistan in Mauritius has arranged meetings of the REAP delegation with relevant chamber of commerce, Ministry Officials and leading rice exporters of Mauritius. Showkutally Soodhun, Minister for Trade and Industries, Government of Mauritius while meeting with REAP delegation informed that State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius issues an international tender every year for 20,000 M/Ton rice for local consumption.
Rafique Suleman, Vice Chairman REAP and leader of the delegation apprised the minister that Pakistani rice is very famous for its taste and quality around the world and in the last fiscal year (2009-2010) Pakistan has exported 12,632 Metric Tons valuing 5.3 million dollar to Mauritius. All the rice shipments have to be cleared through Quality Review Committee (QRC) after proper inspection.
Rafique requested the minister to give a fair level opportunity to Pakistani rice exporters and to maximise the participation, a small level rice exporter may also be allowed to take part in the Tender for quoting at least 4,000 Metric Ton.
Further Rafique appreciated the efforts of Major General Muhammad Siddiq (Retd), the Ambassador of Pakistan in Mauritius for his dedicated efforts for making all the arrangements for this delegation to make this delegation a great success. He also appreciated TDAP for co-ordination with the High Commission to increase the rice export trade and capture the maximum market share of Pakistani rice in Mauritius.-PR
