Philippine President Benigno Aquino on Saturday unveiled a massive photo mosaic of his mother, the late president Corazon Aquino, in a tribute just before the first anniversary of her death. The mosaic, which is larger than 10 basketball courts, was unveiled by the president and his mother's supporters with officials from Guinness World Records present to check if it marks a new record.
"The burden she once carried is now upon me. She managed to overcome it with the help of the people. I hope and pray that you will also be by my side," President Benigno Aquino said to the crowds gathered at the event. The photo mosaic, measuring 200 feet by 250 feet (61 metres by 76 metres), is made up of 3,200 photographs which form a giant portrait of Corazon Aquino who died of colon cancer on August 1, 2009 at the age of 76.
She is widely revered in the country as a symbol of democracy and honesty for her role in toppling the corruption-ridden dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. Her death triggered a groundswell of sentiment for her son, Benigno Aquino- then an undistinguished senator - to run for president in the May elections, which he won by a landslide. The president conceded that his mother's death had played a part in his becoming president. "God really has a good plan for all of us. This was a necessary step leading to the triumph of the people in the last elections," he told reporters.
