The main communication artery of the country, Grand Trunk (GT) road, has been opened for vehicular traffic on Sunday noon, says Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The road was closed for all sorts of traffic on Thursday July 29 after being inundated by floodwater following heavy rain.
After the closure of GT road and motorway, Peshawar was cut off from the rest of the country and people faced great difficulties due to stoppage of supply of food items and other necessary goods.
Similarly, people trying to reach or go out of Peshawar, remained stranded. The rescue and relief operation was also badly affected by closure of roads because those who wanted to extend help were unable to reach to the flood hit people.
However, as rains stopped and flood receded, NHA and FHA resumed efforts to revive the road-link between Peshawar and rest of the country. The motorway was opened for traffic on Saturday night, while the GT road was opened on Sunday noon. A lot of destruction has been caused by flooding of GT road and motorway while a number of bridges were also washed away.
