In a fresh move the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) sacked its another 32 employees after confirmation of what it claims "various charges" against them. The move is another blow to the KESC employees as the company has already fired almost 294 employees of various cadres besides the 30 contracted staffs within the last three months.
According to sources, the new development has created a sense of uncertainty among the KESC employees. In April 2010 the company fired employees ranking from general manager to officers while it also denied renewing the contracts of around 30 employees who, had served the company for many years. The currently sacked employees include engineers and managers.
Earlier KESC, while reportedly taking a disciplinary action, had fired 294 employees and some of them were given punishment for not improving their performance up to the mark. Talking about the fresh move against the employees, one of the official spokesmen of KESC claimed these employees were terminated after going through a process in which they were given charge sheet and comprehensive inquiries were carried out in all the cases in which they were allowed to give their point of view on charges levelled against them.
He said out of the total 32 cases, 19 included unauthorised absence from duties. Besides theft of electricity, negligence, other charges of corruption and running private business were the reasons for their dismissal/termination. In a statement, Pakistan People's Party, Karachi Division has also condemned the move terming it a violation of basic human rights. It also demanded immediate restoration of the sacked employees.
