The United Nations is reluctant to announce relief package for the victims of flash floods in Pakistan and has linked the release of funds with assessment of losses for right use of aid money for rehabilitation. In an exclusive interview with Business Recorder.
Andrew Shilcadze, UN Chief Field Officer (CFO) in Pakistan said the UN donor agencies are working with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and its four provincial circles particularly Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, Punjab and Sindh, for assessment of losses to release aid package.
Initially, the UN is working to provide flood affected people with high quality nutrition and healthcare services to avoid diseases among the displaced persons and setting up of camp schools to avoid educational loss of affected children. The UN is working with NDMA and its provincial headquarters for assessment of losses of both human lives and the property for release of aid money, he added.
"The UN agencies are also assessing the causes of massive destruction and loss of human lives and property in three provinces and would announce financial aid after the assessment, he said, adding that besides the UN is also working to asses number of affected persons and their mobility in various areas." He said Sukkur has been provided with medicines to avoid water born diseases. Currently, the UN is providing social support to Pakistan and the financial support would be announced after assessment of losses, he added.
