The devastating flash floods in Khyber Pakhtukhwa (KP) has so far claimed more than 1,000 lives and have inundated 578 villages, Business Recorder learnt Monday.
Briefing media regarding the flood situation and relief activities, KP Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussein said that 14 more casualties have been reported from the Malakand Division, 2 each from Bannu and Lakki Marwat, 12 from D.I. Khan, 6 from Tank, 11 from Kohat and 3 from North Waziristan Agency. He also said the number of injured persons has risen to 887.
The villages inundated in the last two days includes - Mathra, Pir Bala, Pir Payan, Khushal Bagh, Shahi Bala, Shakai, Nishat Mills, Regi, Mullazai, Sheikhan, Musazaii, Kafoor Dheri and Mashokhel Mian Iftikhar said a confirmed number of the affected families stands at 0.594 million, which is more than 4.2 million people, while 0.880624 million people have been left homeless by the flas floods. A total of 1,03,283 houses have been destroyed completely, while 67,645 houses have been damaged partly.
The floods have destroyed 496 shops, 283 roads and 258 bridges, while 472 educational institutions, 133 health facilities and 751 drinkable water schemes have also been inundated. Similarly, 100 government buildings, 561 power transformers, 172 electricity poles and 5 grid stations have been destroyed, while the tally of livestock, that died during the floods, stands at 8271. Crops on 62,737 acres were also affected by the flash floods.
The affected families have been provided temporary accommodation in relief camps established in 724 public sector buildings whereas 18,717 families have been accommodated in different parts of the province. These affected families have been provided 54,672 packets of miscellaneous food items, 14,629 tents and 7,800 blankets.
The health authority of the province has established 228 medical camps, which had provided medical assistance to more than 65,000 persons. Similarly, on the request of district administrations, Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda and Tank have been provided 32,120 more packets of food items and an aid of Rs 36 million.
A provincial government funded relief organisation - Tanzimul Sail wal Mahroom is also busy in activities, and in collaboration with a non-governmental welfare organisation it has provided free medical treatment and medicines to more than 3,000 flood victims.
