Flood Forecasting Division of Pakistan Meteorological Department Lahore has on Monday issued flood warning for River Chenab at Trimmu, which may cause inundation of low lying areas of districts Jhang, Khanewal, Muzaffargarh and Multan. The Flood Forecasting Division observed that under the latest hydrological conditions/ data, it is expected River Chenab at Trimmu will attain a medium to high flood level ranging between 270,000 to 330,000 cusecs during next 24 hours.
Thus, all concerned authorities are requested to take precautionary measures to avoid loss of human lives and property. Also, in next 24 hours River Indus at Taunsa is likely to attain very high flood level (ranging between 680,000 and 730,000 cusecs). Hence, the inundation and riverine flooding in low lying areas of districts Bhakkar, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, D G Khan and Rajanpur is expected.
Significant flood has also been forecast for River Indus at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma and Kotri. According to latest hydro-meteorological conditions, it is predicted that River Indus at Tarbela is likely to attain a high to very high flood level ranging between 550,000 to 650,000 cusecs during next 24 hours. Also, at Kalabagh, it is expected that River Indus is likely to attain a high to very high flood level ranging between 580,000 to 7000,000 cusecs during next 24 hours. At Chashma, River Indus is likely to attain a high to very high flood level ranging between 720,000 to 780,000 cusecs during the same period.
At Kotri, River Indus is likely to attain a very high to exceptionally high flood level ranging between 600,000 to 800,000 cusecs and thus under this scenario, the inundation and riverine flooding of low lying areas of district Hyderabad, Thatta and adjoining areas along with river bed is expected. The Flood Forecasting Division has advised all the concerned authorities to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid/minimise loss of lives and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Meteorological Department Lahore has on Monday forecast more widespread monsoon rains during next 24 hours. According to the met office, Sunday's low over west Madhya Pradesh (India) has merged into seasonal low and its trough is extending to southern parts of Sindh. Southwest monsoon current is penetrating into sub-mountain areas of Punjab and Kashmir up to 3000-feet.
Hence, fairly widespread thunderstorm/rain is expected over Lower Sindh and Kashmir. Scattered thundershower/rain is expected over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Upper Sindh and southern and north-eastern parts of Balochistan.
Monday witnessed continuation of monsoon rain at various places, including Nawabshah 109 mm, Badin 102 mm, Chhor 48 mm, Bunji 30 mm, Hyderabad 26 mm, Parachinar 20 mm, Rohri 18 mm, Karachi(Faisal) 16 mm, Gilgit 15 mm, Rawalakot and Bannu 14 mm (each), Astore 12 mm, G. Dupatta and Mohen-Jo-Daro 1 11 mm (each), Zhob, Lahore (airport) and Karachi (airport) 9 mm (each), D. G. Khan, Bahawalpur and Pattan 8 mm (each), Sukkar and Kotli 7 mm (each), Lasbela and Skardu 6 mm (each), and Dir and Hatianbala 5 mm (each).
