Three leading telecom operators have contributed Rs 238.5 million for the flood affected people while other operators are gearing up efforts to assist the masses in this need of hour. Telenor made a major contribution as its representative handed over a cheque of Rs 100 million to Secretary General, Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Brigadier Muhammad Ilyas Khan (Retd) at a ceremony.
The amount will be utilised to facilitate immediate relief efforts and long-term rehabilitation initiatives by PRCS. Another telecom operator, Mobilink, committed Rs 85 million for providing relief to the flood affected people. Mobilink will be co-ordinating with relief organisations including World Food Programme (WFP) and World Health Organisation (WHO) to reach out to the flood victims to ensure that aid needs of the deserving and un-served are met in an efficient manner. The funds will be used to provide immediate relief assistance including clean drinking water and dry food rations.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and its sister organisation, Ufone, made a joint contribution of Rs 53.5 million to the Prime Minister's Flood Relief Fund. Walid Irshaid, President of PTCL and Ufone and Abdul Aziz, CEO Ufone, called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and expressed their solidarity at this time of need.
