Four thickly populated districts of Sindh, including Shikarpur, Jacobabad and Larkana, have been put on red alert as breaches have occurred in Sindh Canal and Begari Sindh (BS) Feeder due to continuously rising pressure of floodwater at Sukkur Barrage. Three and five breaches occurred in Sindh Canal and the BS Feeder, respectively.
A 'high to exceptionally high flood' of 600,000 cusecs to 800,000 cusecs would reach Kotri Barrage on Wednesday (today). Kotri Barrage has a capacity to withstand the pressure of 850,000 cusecs of water. There are 113 embankments between Sukkur Barrage and Kotri Barrage. The districts of Khairpur, Naushero Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Matiari, Jamshoro and Hyderabad have also been put on high alert.
After breaches in Tori embankment and Ghauspur embankment, breaches occurred in BS Feeder, which was termed the last lifeline to save the four districts, on Tuesday. District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Jacobabad Kazim Jatoi had asked the residents of Mirpur Burrur, Thul and Jahgal to evacuate their places. Floodwater inundated 1400 villages of District Shikarpur. At least seven people, including two women, died as the high pressure flood water washed away scores of houses.
DCO Thatta has also issued red alert warning and asked the people of low-lying areas to evacuate their homes. Due to breaches, Ghauspur, Karampur, Sher Garh, Mirwah, Bari, Jumma Goth, Qadir Dilu, Mian Saad, Mureed Ali and Thoriwah have been covered by water completely. Road link between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh through Indus Highway has been disconnected due to accumulation of water in Ghauspur to Karampur.
On the other hand, 'super flood' has claimed lives of 10 more people in District Ghotki. The water level at Qadirpur loop bund, KK bund, LM bund and Bacha Bhio bund has started receding following a significant reduction in water pressure at Guddu. Pakistan Army is still monitoring the situation on these embankments.
