The parliamentary committee on national security has recommended that the Prime Minister should ask the Finance Ministry to immediately allocate budget for rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.
The committee also recommended that the Prime Minister should also write letters, or to talk on telephone, to his counterparts in the world, particularly of Muslim countries, to inform them of the flood situation in Pakistan, and request for urgent assistance, especially food items, tents, medicines and others.
The committee also suggested that the government should reallocate the funds, already allocated for new projects in the current budget, for building the destroyed infrastructure in the country as a consequence of the floods. A meeting of the parliamentary committee on national security was held under the chairmanship of Senator Raza Rabbani. Senators Ishaq Dar, Shahid Hassan Bugti, Afrasiab Khattak and Muhammad Ibrahim attended the meeting. The committee also recommended that federal government should exempt flood relief donations from taxes at the federal and provincial levels.
The committee recommended that the Prime Minister should also immediately call a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), in which the chief ministers of all provinces should participate, to assess the collective damage in all provinces, keeping in view the ground situation, and take broad policy decision to co-ordinate the efforts for reconstruction.
The parliamentary committee on national security also constituted a bi-partisan committee, which would review the pace of reconstruction efforts of the government, after every three months. The committee also recommended that the government should give first priority to control spread of water borne diseases.
The committee also recommended that the government should put all donations, in cash or kind, on the website of the federal government. Raza said that these recommendations have been communicated to the Prime Minister, through a letter, on behalf of the committee.
